Setting Up a Custom Bot

Setting Up a Custom Bot

By default, Metricgram sends group messages through the standard Metricgram bot. For a specific group, you can use your own Telegram bot by saving its bot token in that group's settings.

Why use a custom bot?

  • Branding -- messages are sent by a bot with your own name, photo, and description
  • Trust -- members see a bot that belongs to your community
  • Professionalism -- useful for paid communities and business groups

Create your custom bot

  1. Open Telegram and search for @BotFather.
  2. Send /newbot and follow the prompts.
  3. Choose a name and username for your bot. The username must end in bot.
  4. Copy the bot token provided by BotFather.

Connect it to a group in Metricgram

  1. Add your custom bot to the Telegram group as an administrator.
  2. In Metricgram, select that group.
  3. Open the group's settings.
  4. Paste the token into the custom bot token field.
  5. Save the group settings.

Metricgram verifies the token before saving it. If Telegram cannot find the bot or the token format is invalid, the group will not be updated.

Customizing your bot

Through BotFather, you can also set:

  • Profile photo -- /setuserpic
  • Description -- /setdescription
  • About text -- /setabouttext
  • Commands list -- /setcommands

Important notes

  • Custom bot tokens are configured per group.
  • Add the custom bot as an administrator in the same group where you save the token.
  • Do not share your bot token. Anyone with the token can control the bot.
  • If you revoke the token in BotFather, update or remove it from the group settings in Metricgram.
